Workstation ESD Protection Setup

A complete ESD-safe workstation has three components, all working together:

  1. ESD workbench mat — the surface that components touch. Must be 10⁶–10⁹ Ω surface resistance, properly grounded.
  2. ESD wrist strap — for the worker. Connects the worker to the same ground as the mat, keeping worker and mat at the same potential.
  3. ESD floor mat or ESD footwear — controls static generation as the worker walks. Especially important in dry climates or heated facilities.

EDAR produces the workbench mat and floor mat components. For wrist straps and other workstation accessories, we recommend sourcing from a specialized ESD accessory supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of an ESD workstation mat?

The most common sizes are 1.0m × 10m and 1.2m × 10m — sold as rolls that can be cut to exact workbench dimensions. Standard thickness is 2.0mm for general use, 3.0mm for heavy-duty applications.

How do I install an ESD workstation mat?

Installation takes about 15 minutes: roll out the mat, trim to size, install grounding snap stud at one corner, connect grounding cord to verified ground point, test resistance with a surface resistance meter to confirm 10⁶–10⁹ Ω.

How often should I test my ESD workstation mat?

Per ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1, ESD workstation mats should be tested at least annually, and quarterly in high-use environments. Use a surface resistance meter to verify 10⁶–10⁹ Ω.

Can I use an ESD workstation mat for soldering?

Yes — EDAR's dual-layer NBR + natural rubber mats withstand -30°C to +300°C without degradation, well above typical soldering iron temperatures. Vinyl mats (80°C limit) are NOT suitable for soldering.
